LATE MODEL RACING RETURNS TO POWERCOM PARK,
SPEED ZONE IN 2005
17 WDLMA Shows Inked Between the Two Tracks
BEAVER DAM, WI – Officials of Wisconsin Motorsports & Entertainment, LLC, and
the Wisconsin Dirt Late Model Association have come to terms on a 17-race
schedule for the 2005 season between the Raceway at Powercom Park and Oshkosh’s
Powercom Speed Zone.
After a strong showing in 2004 Wisconsin Motorsports General Manager Rex Melius
made the move to contact the WDLMA with regards to an increased schedule for the
coming year. Melius along with Brian Konopka and Bill Behling, who steers the
WDLMA, is very excited about the prospects of the new year.
“Without a doubt the late model shows that we had last year, between Beaver Dam
and Oshkosh, have
been outstanding. The car count was excellent and the fans really responded to
the fact that we had late models. This is nothing but a win-win situation for
all involved.
“Both Powercom facilities are perfect for late model racing. The fans at both
tracks love the power and speed of the cars. And, WDLMA was looking for a
steady home to compete at. By giving them 17 shows between our two tracks they
now have that. It will allow them to develop some other programs around what we
have offered to them.”
The inaugural WDLMA program at the Speed Zone drew over 30 entries in 2004.
While the car count did tail off a little bit during the year the average number
of late models competing in the Powercom events was nearly 24. Melius expects
more of the same this coming year.
“We expect the car count to be good with hopes to build on it. By giving late
model drivers a solid schedule and a home track or tracks there are now other
drivers from other classes looking at building or buying late model stock cars.
If that starts to roll and mix it in with what the WDLMA has and the solid group
of cars in
Northeastern Wisconsin
and the possibilities are endless,” said Melius.
Preliminary details call for the WDLMA drivers to qualify each night and compete
in a 20-lap feature event. Time trials will be held prior to the regular
starting time at each track which will allow for all events to be completed
before the mandated curfew.
“We are still going to run all of the divisions that we have in the past and
throw in the late models as well,” said Melius. “It will be a little tighter on
time but we are trying to give the fans the best show possible for the money.
Our weekly program is strong at both tracks when it comes to car count. The
addition of the late model division will only enhance that.”
The Raceway at Powercom Park
is located just off of Highway 151 and Highway 33 in Beaver Dam. The Powercom
Speed Zone is three miles north of Oshkosh
on Highway 76. For more information contact Wisconsin
